The Boston Terrier originated from the USA In the 19th century in Massachusetts. They came from a cross between an English Bulldog and White English Terrier. In the beginning, the breed was bred for fighting and over time has become one of the most popular household pets! There have been several notable Boston's throughout history, with the most well-known being Hooper’s Judge. They are nicknamed the "American Gentleman". Can anyone guess why? It is from there notable and distinctive tuxedo markings. When the breed was first established, they were often referred to as "Roundheads". Boston Terriers were first recognized by the AKC in 1893, as a non-sporting breed. Boston Terriers have certain desired markings. Ideally, they have a white muzzle, white blaze between the eyes, white chest and collar. If a Boston has all these, they are said to have traditional markings. We have all seen some with non-traditional markings (half mask/ clown face, solid white head, etc.) and they are just as beautiful as the traditionally marked Boston's. Standard Boston's come in three colors: black and white, seal (black with a red cast in sunlight), or various shades of brindle. It is more common now to see other colors like fawn, blue, lilac, and red. These are not standard colors, but other variations you may see!
